Helmuth Homemade Peppernuts

Peppernuts were brought to our region of Kansas by Mennonite immigrants. They were originally made only at Christmas and were symbols of Holiday hospitality. Because peppernuts were so hard, as you conversed about the past year, or the coming one, you soaked them in tea or coffee to soften them.
Our recipe produces a crisp, bite-size peppernut that captures not only the flavor of the original, but its spirit of hospitality as well.
At Helmuth’s we feel hospitality should not be limited to just the Holidays. That’s why we offer peppernuts all year long.
